What is the treatment like?
Bowen Therapy can be administered through light clothing, with the client sitting, standing or lying. With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.
Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the changes it requires. Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.
Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their symptoms.
It is advised that clients do not have other therapies while receiving this Bowen treatment, this allows the body’s response and assist the healing process.

Short-term acute pain is usually resolved in 1 – 2 Bowen treatments, while other long term chronic pain symptoms occasionally may require longer. A gap of 5 to 10 days is recommended between Bowen treatments; this allows the body to process the subtle information it has been given.

After my treatment what should I do?
- Drink 6-8 glasses of water the same day of the treatment
- Take a walk and avoid sitting for longer than half an hour
- Avoid extremes of hot or cold for example sauna, ice packs or heat packs
- Avoid magnets for a few days
Two treatments within ten days usually about 7 days apart is recommended with follow up in 2 to 4 weeks depending on result. On average the majority of clients require only two treatments for many of the conditions presented. It is recommended for a second treatment so as to stabilise the first treatment, keeps the body balanced so more treatments may not be necessary.
