What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy Pain relief Technique - Joan Campbell

Bowen Technique for everybody is a non-diagnostic, non invasive, gentle, hands-on discipline that works at a complete holistic level, in that it addresses the body as a whole without any particular focus on any individual problematic areas of the body. The Bowen technique consisting of a series of unique gentle moves performed in choreographed patterns over specific points on the body. These moves are interspersed with observation periods which allows the time to recognise the input and to process it. Bowen Technique addresses the body's soft tissue - fascia and muscles into the nervous system to communicate to the brain, with a response to relaxing the entire body, releasing restricted fascia and therefore reducing pain.

What is it?

The Bowen Technique is a gentle, nonintrusive hands on therapy which stimulates the body's inner ability to heal itself to be activated. This reorganisation of the musculature of the body can bring increased energy levels and pain relief.

As a soft tissue therapy, it 'disturbs' the fascia or connective tissue, there is no pulling or cracking of joints and no insertion of needles. The therapist uses fingers or thumbs in a rolling action over specific muscles, tendons and ligaments, incorporating resting periods to allow the body to absorb the information and respond accordingly.

The treatment is basically holistic, treating the whole body and is generally a pleasant and relaxing experience. A treatment will take approximately 25 to 45 minutes. Two within ten days usually about 7 days apart and any necessary follow up in 2 to 4 weeks depending on result. On average the majority of clients I see only twice for many of the conditions presented. Some only come the once and feel so good don't feel it necessary to have the second treatment. I do recommend the second treatment so as to stabilise the first treatment, keeps the body balanced so more treatments are not necessary. The person with the problem is the best judge should any more treatment be required.

A Unique Technique

The Bowen Technique is quite unique. There are several features that set it apart from other modalities.

Gentle

It is so gentle that you hardly notice you're being touched. People usually become very relaxed right away, and even fall asleep during a session.

Fast

Rapid pain relief is common. Most pain and injury will respond within two or three sessions.

Long-Lasting Relief

People often experience a deep and long-lasting relief. Two to three sessions spaced one week apart are usually enough to achieve lasting relief, even from long-standing pain or injury.

Safe

There is no one who cannot be treated safely with Bowen. It is so gentle, it can be used on babies, pregnant women, the elderly and the disabled. It is not dangerous to those suffering from chronic illness and it is ideal for treating children because it is non-invasive and non-threatening.

Two Minute Pauses

It is a unique feature of the Bowen Technique that there are two minute breaks in which the practitioner actually leaves the room. These pauses are crucial as they allow the body time to absorb the "messages" presented by the moves.

No Diagnosing

No diagnostic procedures or exams are used to choose a specific treatment for each ailment.

No "Fixing"

No special attention is given to "fix" the area that is in pain: the technique addresses the entire body.

Painless

There is no cracking, no force and no needles. There is little discomfort or pain involved because there is no heavy pressure or hard probing into sensitive muscles or joints.

Less Is More

The practitioner does the minimum needed to bring about a healing response in the body. The more acute the pain, the less they do. The less they do, the more profound the effect on the body.
